WHAT WAS THAT JUDGE THINKING?
AN INTRODUCTION TO QUILT JUDGING One day, 6 hr Workshop Difficulty: All Levels Workshop Length: 6 hours (1hr lunch break) Location: Vancouver Convention Centre Room: 113 Workshop Fee: $150 This hands-on workshop would be of interest to anyone thinking about entering a judged quilt show, organizing a judged show, or becoming a quilt judge. It is a stand-alone workshop for those wanting a basic understanding of judging. It is also Module 1 of the CQA/ACC Quilt Judge Certification Program and will be credited as such if registrants wish to continue in the program. The QJCP is growing, with a base of 15 Certified Judges and 5 Apprentice Judges. It is an internationally recognized certification that already includes judges from Canada and the USA. 3 hour class An artistic method of blending 2” squares of printed fabric to create Impressionist-style images. Learn which fabrics to select and how to cut and store them in preparation for your first design class. Option to bring fabrics from your collection that you think might be suitable. One day, 6 hr – design only Shady Corner Project is designed to make you comfortable with special fabrics and techniques used to blend 2” squares into an Impressionist-style landscape. Grow from a dark, mysterious corner into full light where a butterfly dances. Add a contrasting border for greater drama. Fabric/palette check (no sewing machine). Use the design wall arrange squares. Use Judy’s original design, based on 2” squares, to piece a maple leaf with side-bars - 33” x 20”. Combine a variety of reds or choose your own colour/print theme. Learn to make quick half-square triangles. Add machine quilting and embellishments to further personalize this great graphic symbol. Concepts and vocabulary of colour and design will improve skills, confidence, appreciation and enjoyment. Hands-on exercises with paper and cloth on worksheets create a greater understanding of the collection and use of materials. One day, 6 hr Class Kit $20 Materials lists/prep e-mailed upon registration. NOTE: Sewing machine required. Explore tools and techniques used for machine quilting, functional or art quilts. Basting, pattern transfer, thread and needle choices will be explored on class samples using a walking foot for straight line quilting and a darning foot for free motion quilting. One day, 6 hr Class Kit $20 Materials lists/prep e-mailed upon registration. NOTE: Sewing machine required. Appliqué is defined as: the cutting out of one material and affixing to the surface of another. Direct appliqué layers materials on top of the backing and each other. Reverse appliqué cuts through he top layer to expose layers beneath. Various samples of hand and machine appliqué will be constructed using kits provided. These small works of art may be mailed or matted and framed. Collage and layer fabrics using heat-set fusible web and a heavy stabilizer. Designs will be created in a 12”x 24” unit which can be fused, quilted, then cut into the desired size. This “mass production” is fast and spontaneous, creating unexpected designs. One day, 6 hr Fabric Kit $40 Materials lists/prep e-mailed upon registration. NOTE: No sewing machine required. Have fun putting colour theory into practice. The kit contains a range of pre-cut and fused squares ready to create a convincing illusion of transparency. Pure hues are overlapped by using fusible machine appliqué to create secondary and tertiary colours. Black, white and grey squares are added to create tints, tones and shades. Pick a theme that suits a vertical 3” tube format... ie. trees, layers, colour study, rock strata, landscape. Bringing your own fabric you will piece and quilt at the same time making a sleeve to slip over a lightweight PVC pipe. Learn how to hang these unusual artworks. One day, 6 hr Foiling Kit $20 Materials lists/prep e-mailed upon registration. NOTE: No sewing machine required. Add pizzaz to Christmas gifts/cards. Explore several quick and effective methods to add the seductive gleam of metallic foil to fabric. Make samples with notes. Bring in finished items - fabric postcards/wall hangings to embellish.
